Intels Desktop CPU Roadmap Leaked: i3 Introd, i5, i7 Get Boosts

We’ve been hearing about Intel’s upcoming i3 CPUs for some time, now: they’re the mainstream segment of the next-generation silicon that was first introduced with the Nehalem-based Core i7 chips last fall. What we haven’t seen until now, however, is price – and it looks like AMD might need to be worried.

AMD’s very high-end CPUs get trounced by Intels in the rankings. They’ve more than made a name for themselves, however, in the low- and mid-range segments of the market, providing outstanding performance for the price. That all change, however, as the first Core i3 chips by Intel look to be coming in somewhere in the $130s (no doubt in buys of 1000 CPUs) which is right around where AMD has been competing. Granted, we still don’t know how the performance will be but given Intel’s track record in the past year, it’s not looking good for AMDs. The rest of Intel’s lines get boosts as well, with new Extreme edition processors coming out at the $999 as well as the fleshing out of their i5 lines.
